NUMBERS STATIONS Shortwave radio stations broadcasting lists of numbers or coded messages. Mainly Cold War era, but some continued usage. Agents receiving their message would write down the numbers and decode them using ONE TIME PADS or similiar equipment.
One example of a Numbers Station was the 'Lincolnshire Poacher', broadcast from RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus by the UK SIS. The interval signal was several bars from the folk song of the same name, with a female voice reading five-number groups.
