MINARET - (NSA)

MINARET - (NSA) sister program to SHAMROCK. Electronically-retrieved data on US citizens on a 'watch-list' was disseminated to various law enforcement agencies and government departments such as the CIA and FBI. Operated 1967 - 1973, targets included Martin Luther King, Jr, Muhammad Ali and Senator Frank Church who headed the committee to expose both programs. The issue of warrantless electronic surveillance proved controversial leading to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, limiting the NSA's powers.
