MUSCULAR - (NSA/GCHQ)

MUSCULAR/DS-200B - (NSA/GCHQ) Surveillance programme retrieving data from the main communications links connecting the data centres of Yahoo! and Google. This data is sent to data stores at NSA HQ, Fort Meade, Maryland. The programme runs through an access point known only as DS-200B, external to the USA. The MUSCULAR program reportedly collects more than twice as many 'selectors' - or data points as the PRISM system. while the latter system requires a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant, MUSCULAR requires none. The system used a weakness in Yahoo! and Google software; data was transmitted unencrypted inside cloud computing networks. Google has since announced it plans to encrypt this data.
