ThinThread - (NSA) 1990's era wiretapping and analysis program. Discontinued post 9/11. Prototype of PROJECT TRAILBLAZER. ThinThread contained privacy protection for US citizens, removed for TRAILBLAZER. Such protection included fail-safes such as anonymized data, which would only be decrypted on identification of a terrorist threat. ThinThread was capable of sorting massive amounts of telephone and e-mail data, identifying and encrypting any U.S.-origin data, plus used automated audits to improve efficient handling and eliminate abuses.
Recently it has been revealed ThinThread was tested on the population of New Zealand without their knowledge by New Zealand's Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) during 2000/2001.
